The family of TIRU CHABBA, one of the two men killed in a mass shooting at Florida State University (FSU) last month, is calling for a thorough and transparent investigation as lingering questions about the violence remain unanswered. National civil rights attorney BAKARI SELLER, alongside colleagues JIM BANNISTER and J ROBERT BELL III, held a press conference on the FSU campus on Wednesday, seeking clarity on Chabba’s tragic death.
SELLER emphasized the family’s gratitude for the support they’ve received but stressed the necessity of a detailed inquiry. *“We’re asking for a thorough and transparent investigation,”* he stated. *“We believe that’s essential for healing.”*
TIRU CHABBA, a 45-year-old father from Greenville, South Carolina, was on the FSU campus working as an employee for a campus vendor when the shooting occurred on April 17. He leaves behind a grieving wife and two children.
*“He was a beloved family man,”* SELLER said. *“When your father goes on a work trip, he’s supposed to come home. This is a nightmare for the family.”*
SELLER acknowledged the efforts of law enforcement, Florida Governor RON DESANTIS, and FSU President RICHARD McCULLOUGH, who reportedly attended Chabba’s funeral. The family is seeking accountability regarding the criminal process, including investigating the shooter’s motives and how he obtained the firearm.
*“We’re looking for accountability from the university,”* SELLER added. *“What, if anything, could they have done to prevent this tragedy, and how can they ensure such incidents don’t happen in the future?”*
McCULLOUGH expressed his condolences in a statement, affirming the university’s cooperation with law enforcement. *“We share the family’s grief, anger, and desire for answers,”* he said. *“FSU is fully cooperating with investigators, and we look forward to the day when all facts are known.”*
The other victim in the shooting has been identified as ROBERT MORALES, a father and food service employee, survived by his wife and daughter. Six additional victims injured in the incident are expected to recover.
Authorities have identified the shooter as PHOENIX IKNER, a 20-year-old FSU student. Investigators revealed he used a handgun that belonged to his stepmother, a former Leon County Sheriff’s deputy. IKNER remains hospitalized after being shot by Tallelesee police during a confrontation. Formal charges are pending his release from medical care.
The investigation continues as the community seeks answers and justice for the victims.
