HAMILTON COUNTY, Ohio — A HAMILTON COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPUTY was tragically struck and killed by a vehicle near the University of Cincinnati on Friday afternoon, according to authorities. The incident occurred around 1 p.m. while the deputy was directing traffic near the campus, which was hosting a graduation ceremony. The deputy, whose identity has not been released, was rushed to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.

CINCINNATI POLICE CHIEF TERESA THEETGE confirmed the details at a news conference, describing the incident as a devastating loss for the community. The driver of the vehicle, identified as the father of an 18-year-old who was fatally shot by Cincinnati police on Thursday, was also hospitalized following the collision.

HAMILTON COUNTY SHERIFF CHARMAINE McGUFFEY paid tribute to the fallen deputy, calling him a “wonderful and dedicated” individual. “I knew the man, and I knew what a tremendous, tremendous person he is and what a tremendous loss we have all suffered,” she said. The deputy had retired a few months prior but continued to serve as a special deputy.

During the university’s commencement ceremony, UC PRESIDENT NEVILLE PINTO requested a moment of silence in honor of the deputy. “Before we get started, sadly, I have to report an incident that occurred today with a Hamilton County deputy sheriff on Martin Luther King Drive,” Pinto said. “It was a very serious incident, and I would like to ask for a moment of silence to respect this officer.”

The Cincinnati Police Department is leading the investigation into the deputy’s death. The incident comes just a day after the driver’s 18-year-old son was fatally shot by police during a pursuit involving suspected car thieves. According to CHIEF THEETGE, the teen allegedly pointed a handgun with an extended magazine at an officer, prompting the officer to open fire. Two other suspects were arrested, while one remains at large.

This tragic series of events has left the community in mourning and raised questions about the circumstances surrounding both incidents. Authorities continue to investigate the details.
